Dear Friend,
Can I let you in on a little secret?
One of the most common messages I receive before a session isn't about locations or weather...
It's this:
"Rose...what on earth should we wear?"
If you're asking that question, first of all—you're not alone.
The truth is, what you wear plays a huge role in how your photographs feel. Not because I'm looking for expensive clothes or perfectly coordinated outfits, but because your wardrobe helps tell your story.
The right clothing allows you to be the focus. It creates harmony, adds emotion, and helps your images feel timeless instead of trendy.
So let's talk about choosing outfits that photograph beautifully while still feeling completely like you.
Wear What Feels Like You...
The most beautiful outfit you can wear is confidence.
If you're constantly adjusting your shirt, tugging at your dress, or worrying about uncomfortable shoes, it shows.
When you feel comfortable...
You laugh easier.
You move naturally.
You cuddle closer.
And those genuine moments become the photographs you'll treasure forever.
Never choose an outfit simply because Pinterest told you to.
Choose one that feels like home.
The Beauty of Neutrals...
If you've followed my work for any amount of time, you've probably noticed something.
I absolutely adore soft, neutral colors.
Creams.
Ivories.
Warm taupes.
Muted greens.
Soft browns.
Dusty blues.
Dusty pinks.
Gentle grays.
These colors photograph beautifully because they don't compete for attention.
Instead, they allow your faces, your connection, and your emotions to become the center of every image.
They also blend beautifully into nature, allowing sunsets, fields, forests, and flowers to complement your story instead of overpowering it.
"Can I Wear Black?"
Absolutely.
Black is timeless.
Elegant.
Sophisticated.
And for some people, it's simply who they are.
I never want someone to stop being themselves because of a photography "rule."
The only thing I encourage is balance.
If one family member is wearing bright white while another is dressed in solid black, the contrast can pull attention away from what really matters—you.
Instead, think in terms of similar richness and depth.
Pair black with charcoal.
Olive.
Deep burgundy.
Warm browns.
Navy.
Dusty pinks.
The result feels intentional and beautifully balanced.
Bright Colors... Let's Talk...
I know vibrant colors are fun.
But here's what many people don't realize...
Neon pink.
Bright lime green.
Electric blue.
Fire-engine red.
These colors actually reflect onto your skin in natural light.
Sometimes your cheeks end up looking pink.
Sometimes your chin looks green.
Sometimes everyone has a strange color cast that wasn't there in real life.
Instead...
Think softer.
Dusty rose instead of hot pink.
Sage instead of lime.
Terracotta instead of bright orange.
Muted navy instead of royal blue.
These colors age beautifully and help create photographs you'll still love twenty years from now.
Coordinating Is Better Than Matching...
Gone are the days of everyone wearing identical white shirts and blue jeans. Honestly, it's a photographers worse nightmare.
Instead of matching...
Coordinate.
Choose a color palette.
Build around it.
Think of your family as pieces of one beautiful painting.
Some examples I love:
Autumn
Cream • Camel • Olive • Rust
Cool & Coastal
Stone • Dusty Blue • Navy • Soft Gray
Romantic
Blush • Warm Taupe • Ivory • Sage
You don't all have to wear the same color.
You simply want everyone to belong together.
Match the Brightness, Not the Color...
Here's one of my favorite little photographer tricks.
Your outfits don't need to match...
But they should feel equally bright—or equally rich.
Imagine one person wearing bright white while another wears dark forest green.
Your eye naturally bounces back and forth because the brightness is so different.
Instead...
Keep everyone within a similar range.
Soft colors together.
Rich colors together.
The result is effortless harmony.
Texture Makes Photographs Come Alive...
If I could give one styling tip...
Choose texture over pattern.
Soft sweaters.
Flowy dresses.
Linen.
Lace.
Chunky knits.
Denim.
Corduroy.
These materials add movement and depth without stealing attention.
Large logos.
Busy graphics.
Bold stripes.
Neon prints.
Those become the first thing people notice.
And I'd much rather they notice your smile.
Layers Tell a Better Story...
Layers are one of my favorite styling secrets.
A cozy cardigan.
A denim jacket.
A shawl.
A scarf.
Not only do they add visual interest, but they also create movement throughout your session.
And the best part?
You can easily remove a layer halfway through your session and suddenly it feels like a second outfit.
Don't Forget Your Shoes...
Shoes matter more than people think.
If we're hiking through a field...
Stilettos probably aren't your best friend.
Instead, think:
Neutral boots.
Simple sandals.
Classic flats.
Clean sneakers when appropriate.
Or barefoot if we're walking along the beach.
Comfort always photographs better than sore feet.
My Biggest Advice...
Please...
Don't stress yourself trying to be perfect.
Your family doesn't need to look like a clothing catalog.
You don't need designer labels.
You don't need expensive outfits.
You simply need clothing that makes you feel beautiful, comfortable, and like yourself.
