When Two People Make Winter Feel Warm
Sydnie & Vernon's Christmas Engagement Session
Some people say they aren't photogenic.
Others say they don't know how to pose.
Sydnie and Vernon told me they hated having their pictures taken.
Looking through these images now... I don't believe a word of it.
There are sessions that remind me why I love what I do.
This was one of them.
When Sydnie and Vernon first stepped out of the car, they laughed and warned me...
"We're going to need a lot of help."
"We hate having our pictures taken."
I smiled because I hear that sentence more often than you might think.
The funny thing is...
The couples who tell me they're awkward almost always end up giving me the most genuine moments.
Not because they're trying to create the perfect photo...
But because once they stop worrying about the camera, they simply become themselves.
That's exactly what happened here.
A Little Christmas Magic...
Our little town square had transformed into something magical.
Christmas wreaths hung from every porch.
Garland wrapped around railings.
Twinkling lights peeked through the trees.
The golden winter sun settled low across the sidewalks, giving everything that soft glow photographers dream about.
It honestly felt like we'd stepped onto the set of a Hallmark movie.
Every corner seemed to offer another perfect backdrop.
And every backdrop somehow looked even better because these two were standing in it.
Cold Air, Warm Hearts...
I'll let you in on a little secret...
It was freezing.
The kind of cold where you lose feeling in your fingers.
The kind where everyone keeps asking,
"Just one more?"
But if someone looked through this gallery without knowing that...
They'd never guess.
Because warmth has very little to do with temperature.
Warmth comes from laughter.
From stolen glances.
From forehead touches.
From the way someone instinctively reaches for another person's hand.
Every time Sydnie looked at Vernon...
Every time Vernon made her laugh...
The cold disappeared.
That's the beauty of photographs.
They don't remember how cold your hands were.
They remember how warm your hearts felt.
They Forgot the Camera Was There...
This is one of my favorite things to witness during a session.
At first...
People wonder where to put their hands.
They ask if they're smiling correctly.
They worry they're doing something wrong.
Then somewhere in the middle...
Everything changes.
The conversation becomes real.
The laughter becomes louder.
The hugs last longer.
The camera quietly disappears.
By the end of Sydnie and Vernon's session, they weren't posing anymore.
They were simply enjoying one another.
Those are always my favorite photographs.
Because those are the ones that still feel real twenty years from now.
More Than Engagement Photos...
An engagement session isn't just another item to check off your wedding to-do list.
It's one of the few moments during wedding planning where you get to slow down.
No timelines.
No seating charts.
No guest lists.
Just the two of you.
Laughing.
Walking hand in hand.
Dreaming about forever.
That's what I hope every engagement gallery becomes.
Not just beautiful photographs...
But a memory of what it felt like before you said "I do."
A Hallmark Kind of Love...
I don't think it was the Christmas decorations that made this session feel magical.
It wasn't the wreaths.
Or the lights.
Or even the golden sunset.
It was these two.
The way they naturally leaned into one another.
The way Vernon looked at Sydnie when she laughed.
The way Sydnie completely relaxed every time he wrapped his arms around her.
Love has a way of making ordinary places extraordinary.
And somehow...
They made an already beautiful Christmas evening feel even warmer.
Rose's Reflection...
One of my biggest hopes as a photographer isn't simply that you love your images.
It's that you love the experience of creating them.
I know stepping in front of a camera can feel intimidating.
Almost every couple tells me they're awkward.
That they don't know what to do.
That they aren't photogenic.
Can I tell you a secret?
You don't have to know any of those things.
That's my job.
Your job is simply to show up together.
I'll guide the posing.
I'll find the light.
I'll make you laugh.
And somewhere between all of that...
You'll forget there's a camera nearby.
That's when the real magic happens.
That's when photographs stop looking posed...
...and start looking like memories.
